For Monty Stevens, photography is more than just a passion - it's a way of life. Born and raised in Gitxsan Territory, Monty has spent his entire life on the iconic Skeena and Kispiox Rivers of Northern BC, capturing the stunning beauty of the landscapes and wildlife with his camera.

Monty's love for photography began as a way to share his outdoor adventures with his aging mother, who loved the outdoors but was unable to get out as much as she used to. What started as a way to connect with his mom has now turned into a lifelong passion of photography, which most recently has led Monty into the world of aerial video and photography using drones.

As a proud member of the Gitxsan Nation, Monty is deeply committed to protecting the land and waters that sustain his people. He belongs to the Wilp "Gwiiyeehl and Xantxw, Gisk'ahaast" clan, and his smoo'git name is Xantxw. His role in the community includes bringing food to his Wilp members, including Sockeye salmon from his "An'aat" (fishing hole) and moose meat.

Monty is a great friend and we love getting visits from him here at the shop! As a regional ambassador and Gitxsan River Guardian, Monty has no shortage of hard-earned stories from the river. Monty’s energy is contagious, and he loves to share the stunning natural beauty of the region, as well as the rich culture and history of the Gitxsan people.

Through both his photography and river adventures, Monty invites people to experience the magic of the Kispiox River, home to dynamic people, mighty grizzlies, and soaring eagles. The ancient village at the confluence of the Kispiox and Skeena Rivers is marked with impressive Hereditary Totem Poles belonging to different Houses or Families. Monty has an intimate knowledge of his Gitxsan culture and is an embodiment of the collective respect for the water that flows through the veins of the Gitxsan people. He believes that the flow and life of the waterways are inextricable from life in Gitxsan Territory, a belief he shares first-hand with friends and visitors while out on the water.

With his deep connection to the land, water, and wildlife of Northern BC, Monty Stevens is a true ‘living legend’ of the region, and his stunning photography and river adventures are a testament to the natural beauty and rich cultural heritage of the area.
