Salt Water Fishing Report

The weather is starting to warm up and so is the fishing out of Prince Rupert and Kitimat.  Lots of halibut and ling cod are being caught and the crabbing has been excellent. The commercial prawning season opens on May 11th so if your looking for big prawns, now is the time to get them. Things tend to slow down once the commercial fleet gets let loose and prawns become hard to come by.

When targeting Halibut, look for underwater plateaus at around 200ft although halibut can be caught in water as shallow as 50ft and as deep as 400. Big Gibbs Delta hoochies on a spreader bar was working well for us this past weekend. We also picked one up on a Gibbs Delta Mudraker. A little bit of salmon belly smothered in Tuna oil for taste always helps as well.
When targeting ling or yellow eye snapper, look for underwater pinnacles and drift from shallow water to deep working the edge of the pinnacles as the depth increases. P-Line Hali Drop jigs or glow weighted hoochie rigs are working well right now for big ling and Yellow eye. Both are available at Oscars Source for Adventure.
King Crab have been caught over the last month and are just staring to slow down for the season but are still available. Hoop traps baited with fish heads work well for kings set in about 80ft of water. Stay tuned for more up to date salt water information.
Thank you to Lee Mac for our first Salt Water Fishing Report of the year! Go fish!
