Trip Tips
Malkow Lookout
The Malkow Lookout must be one of my favorite family hikes in the Smithers vicinity. To find the trail head drive up the old Babine Lake Road. Hang a left on McCabe Road and follow it up until you see a parking lot to your left (on your right you will see a sign for the Logpile Lodge - wonderful bed and breakfast).
The Malkow Lookout Trail winds through private land. So please be considerate - close all gates behind you. Good light hiking shoes are recommended as the trail might be muddy in spots... After hiking for about 40 minutes you begin to see Hudson Bay Mountain and the valley. Another 10-15 minutes will bring you to the top of the hill where the views are spectacular. There are two picnic tables at the "summit" should you decide to have a snack.
Happy hiking!
Family Hiking
Have you ever gone to Driftwood Canyon Provincial Park? This park situated only a few minutes from Smithers is great for a short family outing. From the parking area a nice wide trail leads you to the fossil beds. Great hike for kids! Learn about fossils and local history. Pic nic tables are available by the parking lot should you decide on having a snack by the river!
If you continue up the road from Driftwood Canyon Park you will enter Babine Mountain Provincial Park. McCabe trail is a family friendly hike. Don't forget your bear spray, insect repellent, camera..... Maps are available at Oscar's should you decide to spend more time in the park.
Happy hiking.
